Music Commission - Kirk Barley (UK)

Camden Art Centre has commissioned Kirk Barley to compose the music to accompany The Botanical Mind Online programme. He has adopted the Fibonacci sequence, a naturally occurring pattern that repeatedly appears in the botanical world, as an underpinning tuning system (or scales) for the compositions. The music explores how intricate number patterns found in nature can be channelled to generate synthesised rhythmic and melodic patterns.

Kirk Barley is a Yorkshire composer and sound artist, currently based in London. His highly textural music is formed from studio and field recordings, digital synthesis, and musique concrète audio processing techniques. Drawing influence from minimalist music, techno and hip-hop, he experiments with unusual time signatures, just intonation tunings and algorithmic composition, to create a unique and compelling sound world. Barley has performed across the UK, Europe, and Canada, and has completed commissioned work for the Open Music Archive and British Art Show.
